My final project for Black & White Photography explored the plant's role in an upper-class residential neighbourhood. The five images chosen depict their use as barriers, in varying degrees. While shooting, I realized that the mirror in my camera was misaligned, and was forced to focus not by vision, but by the distancing scale printed on the lens. I'm not very good at guessing distances, and did not bring a tripod on this overcast day to allow for a smaller aperture and therefore larger depth of field, so most of my photographs turned out predictably blurry. Rather than reshoot with a different camera, I decided to either hide or exploit this trait at the darkroom stage. I tried photogram-style texturing with plastic wrap, water damage, and solarization. In the end, I went with something simple and effective; a vignette, to push the photographs into the 19th Century.


135 Kodak Tri-X 400 film, self developed
printed on Ilford Multigrade IV Warmtone 8x10 RC Paper
scanned black & white before mounting, then edited to simulate board and recreate tone
